| Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo
Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo has four primary objectives: conservation, research, recreation, and education. In promoting these objectives on a local, regional, national, and global scale, the Zoo provides recreational opportunities that enhance visitors' knowledge of the natural world. The Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom Pavilion, Lozier IMAX Theater, and Cat Complex showcase fascinating wildlife and exotic places. The Scott Aquarium and Lied Jungle, Desert Dome, Kingdoms of the Night, Hubbard Gorilla Valley and Hubbard Orangutan Forest provide immersive environments that display animals in their natural habitats. The Bill and Berniece Grewcock Center for Conservation and Research provides state of the art medical and research capabilities in the fields of animal care and management, reproductive physiology, nutrition, genetics and genome resource banking. Research efforts include conservation and genetic marker studies on Madagascar Lemurs, nutrition analysis of zoo animals, rare and endangered plant species propagation, as well as a highly successful research program in reproductive physiology for both tiger and gorilla species. Staff at the Scott Aquarium are active in the research of coral propagation, as well as other conservation efforts. The Zoo, in partnership with several other organizations, has launched the Amphibian Conservation Initiative to address the issue of the severe decline in amphibian populations. This initiative includes the establishment of facilities and the training of staff capable of quarantining amphibians and carrying out captive breeding programs. There Zoo has educational programs for school groups, homeschoolers, scouts, and teacher workshops. There is also an aggressive undergraduate, graduate, and post doctoral student program to provide educational experience to North American and overseas students alike. |
